Academic librarians nationwide discuss nation building at 7th CE-Logic National Electronic Conference
More than 100 library and information specialists from universities and colleges all over the Philippines convened at the C & E Information and Resource Center in South Triangle, Quezon City on May 28 and 29, 2015 for the 7th CE-Logic National Electronic Conference. “Creating a Legacy Towards Nation Building: Librarians and Information Specialists in Today’s Information Society” was the theme of the conference.
Unlike previous conferences which focused on library management, this year’s lectures mainly explored the various ways library professionals can contribute to nation-building.
The resource speakers on the first day of the conference included 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida, who discussed his “Kariton Klasrum” advocacy and volunteerism; University of the Philippines Information Technology Development Center Director Prof. Paulo Noel Paje, who tackled the benefits of mobile technology in libraries; veteran journalist and documentarist Howie Severino, who talked about media literacy; and UP Human Resources Development Office Deputy Director Prof. Johann Cabbab, who shared insights on the expanding roles of library and information specialists.
On the second day, Dr. Mary Sylvette T. Gunigundo, chief education program specialist of the Quality Assurance Division of the Commission on Higher Education, opened the conference with a lecture on the advancement of the quality of Philippine education through good governance. This was followed by Singapore IT Federation Special Program Office Director Tack Wai Wong, who discussed the use of radio frequency identification technology in academic libraries. Lourdes David, a member of the Board for Librarians of the Professional Regulations Commission led the synthesis of the lectures.
Aside from the lecture series, delegates also attended product presentations and business meetings conducted by CE-Logic’s foreign partner representatives, namely, Vincent Cheah, senior product manager of Cengage Learning; Adam Goh, sales manager of Elsevier; Lyndon Tan, Elsevier’s head of sales in Southeast Asia; Arun Venugopal, national sales manager of Wolters Kluwer; and Cameron Cumming, sales manager of Invengo.
Manolet Siojo, chairperson of the Leadership and Strategy Department of the John Gokongwei School of Management in the Ateneo De Manila University delivered the opening remarks, while CE-Logic President Maximo Gomez and CE-Logic Chief Operating Officer John Emyl Eugenio gave the welcome and closing remarks, respectively.
Meanwhile, delegates were treated to a Latin-inspired fellowship night at Gaucho Cocina y Vinos Argentinos at Robinsons Magnolia, Quezon City on May 28. A Latin dance-off and a raffle draw highlighted the evening.
