The first ever CE-Logic forum drew in over 70 librarians from different academic and professional institutions all over Luzon last Sept. 12. The forum was part of the 34th Manila International Book Fair from Sept. 11-15, at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

With the theme “Advancing the Libraries for the Digital Age,” the conference presented the best practices and use of technology in the library today.

In her talk “Benefits of Electronic Resources in the Library,” Salvacion M. Arlante, chairman of Infomanagement Specialists, Inc. (IMSI), discussed the history of the University of the Philippines’s (UP) subscription to online databases noting how the selection is done by the library management.

Arlante, a retired UP professor, urged the librarians to switch to online databases for easier and more powerful search and retrieval capabilities. She added that electronic platforms have remote access to resources outside a single physical library.

Meanwhile, on her second talk entitled “The Impact of Digitization of Materials: The UP Experience,” Arlante discussed the advantages of digitization amidst the numerous challenges libraries face.

In her report, she said that: “[digitization is] a new technique but is clearly the technology of today and of the future.”

Digitization is a process of representing an object, an image, or a signal by a discrete set of its points or samples. Its end product is termed “digital representation.”

As former head of the team of digital librarians who conducted a digitization project called “UP Digital Library Systems,” Arlante was able to share her first-hand experience in the library digitization.

Product presentations of some online library resources distributed by CE-Logic also took place during the forum. CE-Logic’s RSM, Royce Guerrero, presented the Cengage Philippine Collection, while Weena Alvaran, a representative of McGraw-Hill Education, presented the McGraw-Hill eBook Library.

In the raffle draw, Catherine Felices of Far Eastern University took home a Canon Pixma Printer.
