 makerspace mibf

C & E Publishing, Inc. transformed its booth into a makerspace during its exhibit in the 38th Manila International Book Fair from September 13 to 17, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

A makerspace is any place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore, and discover using a variety of tools and materials as defined by Diana Rendina, a media specialist, teacher, and librarian based in Tampa, Florida, who is also the creator of the blog RenovatedLearning.com.

With the theme "Inspiring Lifelong Learning: Excellence Through Innovation," C & E, together with its affiliate CE-Logic, Inc., its learning solutions division KITE E-Learning Solutions, and its educational solutions partners TTS, Collexi, PlayFacto, Rapid Education, Epson, PuzzleBox, and SixInch, featured various tools and components commonly found in academic makerspaces, including digital resources and assessment tools, 3D printers, interactive projectors, programmable robots, educational toys, and customized furniture. C & E’s emphasis on the importance of makerspaces as creative and learning spaces in academic institutions is part of its program advocating 21st century skills and lifelong learning.

As complement to its exhibit, C & E held a training for teachers and school administrators titled “Continuing Education for the New General Education Curriculum and Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) with the theme “Empowering 21st Century Learners” on the second day of the book fair, September 14. It was designed to support educators in creating and delivering rigorous and responsive educational experiences for learners in preparing them for higher education, career, and civic life. Dr. Amelia Biglete, Director IV of the Office of Programs and Standards Development (OPSD) and Ms. Aline Genato-Magalong, Assistant OPSD Chief, served as the training’s resource speakers.

Apart from the sample makerspace, C & E also featured its comprehensive collection of print books for all learning stages—kindergarten, elementary, high school, senior high school, college, post-graduate and professional—as well as KITE E-Learning Solutions’ products and CE-Logic’s launching of its new library management system, Helios.
